Cow Lane, Upton

This page is due entirely to Heather, who wrote to the website from near Upton in Lincs. to tell me about the wide verges in the lanes around her.  Cow Lane is only one of them: wide verges are both East and West of Heapham and also on Common Lane, Upton (DN21 5DT) and Glentworth Road, East of Kexby.  I am using Heather's words here because I don't know the area.

So, if you have any information on these old drovers' tracks, which Heather guesses were the route to Gainsborough Market, please write in.  All I can see from the map is that the Lane seems to go east-west, that it snakes around the field boundaries for 2-3 miles, becomes Kexby Road, then stops at the B1398.  This is not what drovers' roads are supposed to do, generally; they find the quickest and straightest way so as not to tire out man and beast...

Meanwhile, look at these superb photos.  The area covered by the invisible tarmac is, at the most, one third of the width between the hedges.

Thank you, Heather!
