Leckford Hutt to Alresford (2)
This page is really a container for some more pictures. But I ought to say something about Alresford.
The town was planned & built by the bishops of Winchester in the 12th Century. Winchester was the richest see in the country, but a navigable waterway from Alresford down to Southampton would make it richer. Of course, wool would be the main cargo.
So the bishops planned & built the town. They also dug a 200-acre lake to provide water in times of drought and make sure that the Alre/Itchen was always ready for business.
